The decision to put up some cheap blinds for the windows in your home or office is usually done with the intention of sprucing up the interiors and adding to the beauty and decor. However, when installing cheap blinds, one also needs to pay very close attention to the safety aspects of blinds. Many accidents, some even fatal, can result from not paying attention to safety considerations when installing blinds.

Child safety comes to the top of the list when dealing with blinds safety. Avoid long blind cords extending to the floor or close enough to the floor. A key method to ensure safety with blinds around children is to make sure that a child cannot reach the blind cords. If there are infants in the house, use cordless blinds only. Instead of cords, you can order wands in their place. The reason for this is that blind cords can cause strangulation of the infants and small children and the safety aspect needs to be adhered to strictly. Even if the blinds cord is higher than the child’s reach, install an extra nail high enough to tie the cord on to so a child cannot jump to reach the cord.

Additionally, avoid very long length blinds where the cord can be reached by the child and pulled sufficiently enough to give enough cord length for mischief. Children are playful by nature and it is up to the adults to make sure that their playfulness does not interfere with their safety and hence extra care and precautions need to be taken to ensure safety with blinds.

If cords are used, make sure they are not reaching a heating element or other sources of high heat. If you use space heaters in your home, keep the space heaters away from blind cords to prevent a fire hazard. When in doubt, consult the blinds manufacturer for additional safety tips. And please read all of the safety instructions that come with your blinds shipment.
